The diagram below shows the most common Port wine bottle sizes. These sizes are particularly interesting when it comes to Vintage Port, as the unfiltered Port wine matures faster the smaller the bottle volume is. It’s important to note that unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage matures in the same way as Vintage Port.
The most common sizes are the standard 75cl bottle, the half bottle, and the magnum. Larger sizes are rarer. Magnum and double magnum, which correspond to two and four standard bottles respectively, are considered by many collectors to be the best sizes for long-term aging.
Imperial, which holds the equivalent of eight bottles, is an impressive and memorable way to serve Vintage Port to a large number of guests. These majestic bottles are rare and highly valued by collectors. Older vintage ports may occasionally be found in a “tappit-hen.”
